Jay C.: As an anthropologist: definitely falls in the magic, ritual, and belief category.
They just don’t call it that. It’s kind of an integral part of the overall parochial system. Making a distinction between Holy Mother Church and what would be all others grants power. It elevates self status and provides a sort of institutionalized solidarity. “Well, they just don’t understand. We understand… Come with us and let us explain in our terms.”
